Day 1 Quote 1
How I interpret it
Most of us would read this and understand to be mindful of what we say to someone. Especially in a moment of anger or hurt. While I was thinking on this post, it was laid upon me to look at it from a different angle.
They are despicable and harmful. Those who tell them do it with the intention of breaking someone or their spirit. It can cause distress and ruin marriages, bring financial downfall, and loss of friendships. We know and have probably been scarred or caused a few.
But how many times are we spitting out words against ourselves? How many times are we hurling lies from our mouth to the image in the mirror staring back at us? More than I should, I’ve spit out the words failure, ugly, unworthy, crazy, needy, fragile, not tough enough, not good enough, etc., and I’ve not yet come across someone else who hasn’t done the same thing at least once.
Lies, lies, lies….
The Bible tells us lies come from the devil himself. Can I get an amen? All those nasty painful thoughts we verbalize about ourselves are straight from the enemy. Do we always believe that? Uh no. Hello, no lying.
But God spits out and speaks nothing over us and for us but love and grace and mercy. He calls us an amazing work of art, a friend of Jesus, and His child. We are made in His image. I really don’t see God talking down on himself, or us for that matter. When He created the heavens and the earth, animals, man and woman, He didn’t say, “oh crap what have I done?!” He said, “it was good.”
So try spitting out words of affirmation at that person staring back at you in the mirror. Spit out the words God uses. Not the ones of the world, for surely all they end up spitting is venom.
